Flu Emergency: Tips to Avoid the Flu in New York

In New York, the governor has declared a flu emergency. Pharmacists, typically only allowed to administer immunizing agents to those 18 and older, are now allowed to give vaccines to anyone six months or older. Cases of the flu have been reported in every county throughout New York and have been widespread for seven weeks. There have been at least 12 deaths in New York City from flu-related illnesses so far this season.

It is not a feasible option to wrap yourself in bubble wrap, insulated from the world’s germs. Instead, take a moment to read these tips from the U.S. Center for Disease Control on how to best prevent the influenza virus from spreading.

  • Vaccination. The CDC recommends that everyone at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine this season.
  • The season. Flu activity typically peaks in January and February. This year it has hit early.
  • Avoid close contact. Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, try and do the same, and avoid contact with those around you.
  • Stay home when sick. If you do catch the flu, do not go to work. Stay at home for a day or two so you do not run the risk of spreading the virus through your office.
  • Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your face with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may help to prevent those around you from getting sick.
  • Wash your hands. The most basic advice, this is also one of the most effective ways to help stop the spread of germs.
